Staying in the circle of control
There is so much going on in the world right now.
Our attention is constantly being pulled outward into the circle of concern.
War and suffering.
Economic pressure and rising costs.
The noise of social media.
Other people’s opinions and expectations.
Questions about the future of work, of our children, of the planet.
It’s a long list.
Without an anchor, we get pulled into the noise, our minds ruminate and worry in ways that leave us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and powerless.
While it’s important to stay informed, we need to be mindful not to become consumed.
Because when we live predominantly in the circle of concern, we become reactive, our energy scatters, and our agency diminishes.
Circle of control adapted from Stephen Covey
Returning to what we can control
We begin to find steadiness when we bring our attention back inwards to the circle of control.
To the place where we still have agency, not over everything, but over what matters:
· what we focus on
· how we relate to our thoughts and feelings
· the choices we make each day
· how we care for our body and mind
· who and what we give our attention to
This is where we reconnect with our values and what gives us meaning and hope.
This is where we can pause, reflect, and choose our response, rather than being driven by anxious thoughts.
From reactivity to response
When we are anchored in that inner place, something shifts.
We are no longer being pulled around by everything happening outside of us. Instead, we are able to meet it with greater clarity and steadiness.
And from here, something powerful happens - our capacity to influence expands.
Instead of shrinking into anxiety and fear, we begin to extend outward with presence, with care, and with intention. We become agents of change in our own lives, and in the lives of those around us.
Reflection
Where is your attention resting right now?
And what might shift if you brought it back, even slightly,
to what is within your control?
